Why It's More Important Than Ever To Take The Kids Outside

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

As we enter the easter period we thought we would take a look at the numerous benefits that outdoor exercise has for children's physical and mental health.

After two years of restrictions, it's more important than ever to encourage children to spend time outdoors and participate in physical activities. By the way, this needn't be expensive, just getting outside and spending some quality time together is great.

Here are just a few reasons why outdoor exercise is good for children's wellbeing:

Firstly, outdoor exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in children. This is due to a combination of factors, including exposure to sunlight, increased endorphins and reduced stress levels. Studies have also shown that being surrounded by nature can have a calming effect on the mind and improve overall mood.

Secondly, outdoor exercise improves cognitive function and boosts creativity in children. Research has shown that spending time outdoors can improve focus, memory and attention span. It also allows children to use their imaginations and creativity by exploring new environments and engaging in imaginative play.

Lastly, outdoor exercise can help children build social skills and increase their sense of community. Participating in activities such as team sports or group fitness classes can help children build friendships and learn important, face to face communication skills.

In conclusion, outdoor exercise has numerous benefits for children's mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving cognitive function and boosting social skills. So encouraging children to spend time outdoors and participate in physical activities is crucial for their overall well-being.

It's certainly more immediate than waiting six months or more for a talking therapy appointment!
