Jade Robinson was very shy at school, and with an interest in travelling and photography, never imagined she would have the confidence to become a swimming teacher and move into management.
When she started her ‘A’ levels at college her shyness led to a feeling of loneliness and isolation until she became a casual lifeguard and swimming teacher with Burnley Leisure and Culture.
Working at the Trust gave Jade the confidence to travel abroad and teach swimming in other countries. “When I was 16 years old, I didn’t have much confidence but my experience as an employee at Burnley Leisure and Culture gave me the support, opportunity and growth that meant that at 20 years old I was brave enough to get on a plane to Egypt alone to go and teach swimming over there.
I have also spent time teaching in America and Australia. I kept coming back to my role here, saving up and going on another adventure. When I made the decision to settle here and grow my career, Burnley Leisure and Culture supported me all the way. Through their support with training courses and development opportunities I moved up to become a manager. I feel my manager has my back and that she has the confidence in me to make decisions; something that was totally outside of my comfort zone in the past.
I really enjoy working here and believe that Burnley Leisure and Culture has something to
offer everyone through a range of different places and their inclusive nature. I am proud to meet the needs of each customer as a unique individual and I am proud of everything that working for the charity has helped me to achieve.
When I was 16 years old, I would never have believed that working for a charity could help me achieve my dreams.”
Jade's story is the first in a series of LFX member stories. Thank you to Kirsty at Cornerstone for the words and photo.
